How to book a massage in Bangkok: 9 tips to save time and money

How to Book a Massage in Bangkok (and Pay Less): 9 Tips

Short answer: book ahead in an app instead of walking in, pick a 90- or 120-minute session rather than 60, and compare a few time slots before you pay, because app discounts change by slot. In Bangkok, a 60-minute Thai massage at a ThaiHand partner usually costs ฿400–฿800 (median ฿550), so anything far above that should come with a reason: a hotel spa, a private suite or a signature treatment.

Below are the nine habits that save regulars time and money, plus five well-rated shops where a 60-minute Thai massage starts at ฿400–฿590.

Quick picks: 5 well-rated budget massages in Bangkok

5 well-rated budget massages in Bangkok

All five have at least 20 guest ratings averaging 4.6 or higher on ThaiHand.

Shop Area Thai 60 min Foot massage Rating Hours App discount
Urban Calm Massage & Spa Phayathai Rd, Ratchathewi ฿400 ฿400 (60 min) ★ 4.8 (165) 11:00–21:00 up to 10%
Smile Massage Ekkamai Sukhumvit Rd, Ekkamai ฿400 ฿400 (60 min) ★ 4.8 (20) 11:00–23:00 up to 10%
Perception Blind Massage North Sathorn Rd ฿450 ฿450 (60 min) ★ 4.8 (70) 10:00–20:00 none listed
Pela Thai Massage Siam Square Soi 6 ฿550 ฿490 (60 min) ★ 4.6 (250) 10:00–24:00 up to 20%
ThaiThai Massage BTS Nana Sukhumvit Soi 4 ฿590 ฿720 (90 min) ★ 4.8 (148) 12:00–24:00 up to 20%

App discounts are “up to X% off on ThaiHand” and vary by time slot.

Tip 1: Book ahead, don’t walk in

Walking in is a gamble. Popular, well-rated shops can be full when you turn up, and then you either wait or take whatever slot and room are free.

Booking ahead fixes this. You choose the time, the treatment and the length before you leave your hotel, and the shop knows you’re coming. A guest at Oasis Spa Sukhumvit 31 put it plainly: “พนักงานน่ารัก ยิ้มแย้มดีค่ะ ช่วงนี้คิวแน่นต้องตรงเวลานิดนึง” (“The staff are lovely and smiley. It’s fully booked lately, so you need to be on time.” — translated from Thai)

Long public holidays are the worst time to walk in. One guest at Treasure Spa Siam Square One wrote: “only problem we got was the waiting time. because of the holiday, i think they were short on staffs. but overall experience is good! will come again on next visit.” If you’re in town over Songkran or New Year, book days ahead, not hours.

Tip 2: Know the going rate before you pay

What a 60-minute massage costs in Bangkok

Most overpaying happens because visitors don’t know what normal looks like. Here is what Bangkok partner shops on ThaiHand charge: the cheapest 60-minute price per shop for each treatment, across all bookable partners in Bangkok.

Treatment (60 min) Typical range (middle half of shops) Median Shops counted
Thai massage ฿400–฿800 ฿550 154
Foot massage ฿400–฿875 ฿590 199
Oil / aromatherapy massage ฿650–฿1,400 ฿1,100 233

Two things stand out. At the median, oil massage costs about twice as much as Thai massage. And foot massage isn’t always the cheap option: at several of the picks below it costs the same as a full-body Thai massage. So if a 60-minute Thai massage is quoted at well over ฿800, you’re probably paying for a hotel lobby, a private suite or a signature ritual. Our Bangkok massage price guide breaks this down treatment by treatment.

Tip 3: Book 90 or 120 minutes, not 60

Longer Thai massages are cheaper per minute

Longer sessions are cheaper per minute. Comparing the same menu at the same shop, the second hour of a Thai massage typically costs 73% of the first, and the 120-minute session is cheaper per minute at 84% of Bangkok shops (details in our price guide).

App discounts also tend to be bigger on longer sessions. On ThaiHand Bangkok listings, the average maximum discount is 8.4% on 60-minute slots and 10.6% on 90-minute slots. Pela Thai Massage and ThaiThai Massage BTS Nana both follow this pattern: their standard menus show up to 10% off on ThaiHand at 60 minutes and up to 20% off at 90 and 120 minutes, varying by time slot. At ThaiThai Nana, the Traditional Thai Full Body Massage is ฿590 for 60 minutes, ฿850 for 90 and ฿1,120 for 120.

Tip 4: Check a few time slots before you pay

App discounts on ThaiHand change with the time slot, so the same treatment can cost different amounts at 2 pm and 8 pm. Before you confirm, tap through a few slots on the day you want.

Some shops write their own discount windows into their rules. Chaari Spa’s A-ONE Ari branch, for example, says its discounts apply only to bookings Monday to Thursday before 3 pm. Check the shop page rather than assuming a discount applies to every slot.

Of 320 bookable partner shops in Bangkok, 226 offer some app discount and 83 offer up to 30% or more on at least one slot.

Tip 5: Trust ratings with volume, not a perfect 5.0

Bangkok massage booking by the numbers

A 5.0 from three people tells you very little. A high-4s score from well over a hundred people tells you a lot. Of the 320 bookable shops in Bangkok on ThaiHand, 130 have fewer than three ratings, and 86 have at least 20 ratings averaging 4.5 or more. That second group is a sensible shortlist for a first visit.

Look at the rating breakdown as well as the headline score. ThaiHand shows separate scores for ambience, cleanliness and staff. Urban Calm Massage & Spa scores 4.85 for ambience, 4.85 for cleanliness and 4.86 for staff, which matches its overall 4.8 from 165 ratings. When one score is much lower than the others, read the reviews to find out why.

Tip 6: Read the shop’s rules before you book

Every shop page has a description and, for some shops, a special note with house rules. Read both before you pay. Rules we found on Bangkok partner pages include:

  • Cancellation windows. DIORA’s branches allow free cancellation or rescheduling up to 4 hours before your appointment. Later cancellations and no-shows are charged in full.
  • Voucher timing. Let’s Relax listings say vouchers become redeemable one day after purchase, so a voucher bought today can’t be used tonight.
  • Pregnancy policies. Several spas decline certain treatments, or all treatments, for pregnant guests. One says payment is non-refundable if you book anyway, so check before you pay.
  • Discount windows, like the Chaari Spa example above.

Tip 7: Leave a buffer for traffic

Bangkok traffic doesn’t care about your appointment. If you can, choose shops near a BTS or MRT station and take the train, especially in the evening rush. Some listings state the walk: Pela Thai Massage says it’s a 1-minute walk from BTS Siam (exit 6), and ThaiThai Massage BTS Nana says 3 minutes from BTS Nana (exit 2).

Coming by car, leave plenty of time. One Let’s Relax Central Embassy guest wrote: “Due to the horrible traffic (we left the road 45 mins in advance) we still manage to be late for the appointment around 35 mins. The staff there were super nice and allowed us to get compensated for the 35 mins as we were ready to forgo the 35 mins.”

Tip 8: Late night is easy if you book it

You don’t have to fit a massage into the afternoon. Of the 320 bookable partners in Bangkok, 120 stay open until 23:00 or later, and 60 are open until midnight. That includes Pela Thai Massage in Siam Square and ThaiThai Massage BTS Nana, both open until 24:00, and Smile Massage Ekkamai, open until 23:00. Late slots are popular after dinner, so book late-evening times ahead. For early starts, 250 Bangkok partners open at 10:00 or earlier.

Tip 9: Say what pressure you want at the start

Before your Thai massage: four things to say

Pressure that doesn’t suit you is a recurring complaint in reviews, and it wastes your money as much as overpaying does. One guest at Pela Thai Massage wrote: “Didn’t ask if we okay to do stronger messages at the beginning, afterwards our back and shoulders are sore. The service it good, just need a bit more communication with the us before starting.. we did ask to go softer during the the session but some part is too late..”

Don’t wait for the therapist to ask. Before you lie down, say bao bao (soft) or nak nak (strong), point to the areas you want worked on, and mention any injury. Traditional Thai massage can feel intense if you’ve never had one, so read why Thai massage can feel painful before your first session. Most of Bangkok’s partner shops list English-speaking staff (289 of 320), but a few Thai words still help.

Last, budget for a tip. It isn’t included in the menu price. See our guide to how much to tip a masseuse in Thailand, and our massage safety tips for tourists if it’s your first trip.

How much is a Thai massage in Bangkok?
At ThaiHand partner shops in Bangkok, a 60-minute Thai massage usually costs ฿400–฿800, with a median of ฿550. The cheapest well-rated options start around ฿400. Hotel and luxury spas charge much more.

Do I need to book a massage in advance in Bangkok?
Not always, but it’s the only way to be sure of a slot in the evening, on weekends or over public holidays. Booking also lets you compare app discounts by time slot before you go.

Is a longer massage better value?
Usually, yes. Comparing the same menu at the same shop, the second hour of a Thai massage typically costs 73% of the first, and the 120-minute session is cheaper per minute at 84% of Bangkok shops. App discounts are often bigger on longer slots too.

When are massage discounts biggest?
It depends on the shop and the time slot. Discounts on ThaiHand vary by slot, so check a few times before booking. Some shops restrict discounts to weekday daytime. Chaari Spa A-ONE Ari, for example, limits them to Monday–Thursday before 3 pm.

Can I get a massage late at night in Bangkok?
Yes. 120 of the 320 bookable ThaiHand partners in Bangkok stay open until 23:00 or later, and 60 are open until midnight.

What if I’m running late?
Message or call the shop as soon as you know. Some shops are flexible, but some charge in full for no-shows or late cancellations, so read the shop’s rules when you book.
