Short answer: book a Thai massage if you want a full-body session with stretching and rhythmic pressure, done fully clothed and without oil. Book a deep tissue massage if you want slow, firm, oil-based work focused on a few tight areas such as the shoulders, back or legs. On ThaiHand partner menus, the typical 60-minute Thai massage costs ฿590 and the typical 60-minute deep tissue massage costs ฿1,190, so deep tissue usually runs about twice the price at the same shop.
Both are on almost every Bangkok spa menu, and both can feel “strong”, which is why first-timers often mix them up. The difference is in the technique, the oil, what you wear and what the therapist is trying to do with the hour. Below is a side-by-side comparison, real prices from 400+ ThaiHand partner listings, and five places where you can book either one at the same counter.
Thai massage vs deep tissue at a glance
| Thai massage | Deep tissue massage | |
|---|---|---|
| Technique | Palm and thumb pressure along the body, plus assisted stretches | Slow, sustained strokes and pressure on specific muscle groups |
| Oil | No (some menus add tiger balm or herbal balm) | Yes, oil or balm |
| What you wear | Loose clothes the shop provides | Undressed to your comfort level, covered by a towel |
| Where it happens | Thai mattress or massage bed | Massage bed |
| Focus | Whole body, head to toe | A few target areas you choose |
| Typical 60-min price on ThaiHand | ฿590 (median) | ฿1,190 (median) |
| Partner shops listing it | 278 | 71 |
| Guests book it for | A classic Bangkok experience, stiffness after flights or long walks | Desk-job shoulders, gym or running legs, a firmer hands-on session |
What happens in a Thai massage
A traditional Thai massage is done on a mat or bed while you wear loose cotton clothes that the shop provides. The therapist works from the feet up, using palms, thumbs, forearms, knees and sometimes feet to press along the body, and moves you through assisted stretches: hip openers, spinal twists, a back bend or two. There’s no oil, so you don’t need to shower afterwards.
The pressure is rhythmic rather than sustained: press, release, move on. Most menus offer it in 60, 90 and 120-minute versions, and many shops also sell a “with tiger balm” or “with herbal compress” upgrade for a little more. If you want to know why it can feel intense the first time, our guide Ouch!! Why Thai Massage is painful? explains what’s going on.
What happens in a deep tissue massage
Deep tissue is an oil massage on a bed. The therapist uses slow strokes, forearms and steady thumb pressure, and spends longer on a handful of areas (usually neck, shoulders, upper back, lower back or calves) rather than covering every part of the body equally. There are no stretches.
Many Bangkok menus label it as “strong pressure” or “high pressure”, and some shops list a “sport massage” in the same price band. It’s the option to pick if you already know where you hold tension and want most of the hour spent there. For a fuller explainer, see Deep Tissue Massage in a Nutshell: Who needs it?.
Price: what you’ll actually pay in Bangkok

We pulled every bookable ThaiHand partner listing and took each shop’s cheapest price for a standard Thai massage and for a menu named “deep tissue”.
| Duration | Thai massage (median) | Deep tissue (median) |
|---|---|---|
| 60 min | ฿590 | ฿1,190 |
| 120 min | ฿1,250 | ฿2,190 |
- 42 partner shops list both treatments at 60 minutes. At those shops the deep tissue session costs a median ฿600 more than the Thai massage, roughly double.
- The spread is wide. A 60-minute Thai massage runs from ฿300 at a neighbourhood shop to ฿3,500 at the top end, and deep tissue from ฿400 to ฿3,500.
- Most partners show a time-slot discount in the app, so the price you pay is often below the menu price.
How to choose in 30 seconds

- You want the “real” Bangkok experience: Thai massage. It’s the national style and the stretching is the part visitors remember.
- You want to keep your clothes on and skip the oil: Thai massage.
- You know exactly which spot is tight: deep tissue, and tell the therapist the two or three areas to focus on.
- You don’t like being stretched or moved around: deep tissue.
- You’re on a tight budget: Thai massage gives you a longer session for the same money.
- You can’t decide: book a combination menu (see below) or do 60 minutes of each on different days.
Whichever you book, the pressure is adjustable. Saying “soft”, “medium” or “strong” at the start is normal and therapists expect it. If soreness the next day worries you, read Wondering if pain after a Thai massage is normal? first.

Good to know before your first session
- Say your pressure level up front. “Medium” is a safe start for either treatment, and you can ask for more after a few minutes.
- Name your target areas for deep tissue. Two or three areas works better than “everywhere”.
- Eat light beforehand. A big meal right before a Thai massage, with all the stretching and pressure on the stomach side, isn’t comfortable.
- Mention injuries, pregnancy or recent surgery before you start. The therapist will adjust or suggest another menu.
- Book 90 minutes if you can. On most partner Thai massage menus, 90 minutes costs less than 1.5× the 60-minute price.
- Check the time-slot price. The same treatment can be noticeably cheaper in a quiet afternoon slot.

FAQ
Is deep tissue massage stronger than Thai massage?
Not always. Both can be firm. Thai massage uses rhythmic pressure and stretching across the whole body, while deep tissue uses slower, sustained pressure on fewer areas. You can ask for soft, medium or strong in either.
Which is cheaper in Bangkok, Thai massage or deep tissue?
Thai massage. On ThaiHand partner menus the median 60-minute price is ฿590 for Thai massage and ฿1,190 for deep tissue. At shops that offer both, deep tissue costs a median ฿600 more.
Do I need to undress for a Thai massage?
No. You change into loose clothes the shop provides, and no oil is used. For deep tissue you undress to your comfort level and are covered with a towel.
Can I combine Thai massage and deep tissue in one booking?
Some partners sell combination menus, such as a Thai + aroma oil combo at ThaiThai Massage BTS Nana or a Deep Tissue Thai Massage at Calm Massage and Spa in Chiang Mai. Otherwise, book a 120-minute session and ask the therapist at the start.
Which one is better after a long flight or a day of walking?
Many guests book a Thai massage for all-over stiffness after travel because it covers the whole body and includes stretching. If one area such as your calves or shoulders feels tightest, deep tissue lets the therapist spend the hour there.
